In certain instances, the nerves (pulp) of teeth may become damaged and/or infected. Endodontics/Root canal therapy may then be required in order to remove infection, relieve pain and preserve the tooth. Root canal therapy entails removal of the damaged nerve along with any necrotic pulp tissue, followed by the filing and shaping of the root canals in order to adequately receive an inert filling material. Depending on the individual situation, Root canal therapy could take between 1-3 visits in order to complete. Typically many years following root canal treatment, a tooth may become discoloured or brittle due to its non-vital state and in these instances a crown would be required.
